TRAUMA-INFORMED PRINCIPLES
Trauma-informed principles are the framework around which our program is built. To support and promote mental health and resilience, employers and employees alike must have a shared understanding of trauma, its prevalence, and what it looks like. Trauma, stress, and the daily strain of living affect us all. These effects are prevalent and pervasive. Trauma-informed practices increase safety, voice and choice, empowerment, transparency, trust, and awareness of gender issues.
HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS
In addition to being trauma-informed, our program is relationship-informed. Human relationships are the most powerful resource we have. All resilience, mental health, and empowerment happens in relation to others. To be human is to be in relationship. We're told over and over again that self-reliance is what matters. At First Atlas we stress that there is no "I" without "you."
INTENTIONAL, ONGOING, CONSCIOUS PRACTICE
True organizational and/or cultural change only comes through intentional, ongoing, and conscious practice. Learning a few techniques or attending a training are a great start, but implementing and consciously practicing trauma-informed, relationship-based principles lead to enduring change.
VALUES NOT TECHNIQUES
Life is not a controlled experiment. Relying on techniques and methodology does not account for the myriad variables we all encounter while navigating the workplace, and life itself. We will inevitably come up against a situation, person, or event that is wholly unfamiliar or alienating. By emphasizing a set of values over a set of techniques, we prepare you to be as flexible as possible in the face of challenges.
EXPERIENCES ARE UNIQUE
Our experiences are unique and define our identities. Similarity is not sameness, and to assume otherwise is to end meaningful and curious conversation. We must approach one another with curiosity, and the understanding that each person's experience is theirs alone, no matter how similar it may be our own or to others'.
Our curriculum
First Atlas offers resilience training and consultation to mission driven organizations who are interested in taking a holistic, progressive approach to employee well-being and better governance. Our training is values-based and grounded in trauma-informed principles. Organizations who use these principles are better at promoting employee retention and self-care, fostering teamwork, and preventing burnout. Trainings are typically a full day. Shorter trainings are available, but are much more limited in scope. 2-day retreat programs are also available. All of our trainings are conducted by two expert facilitators. All trainings include ample dialog with participants, and on the spot skill building activities.
